CONTENTS OF THIS FILE: 1. Dated documents; 2. Documents and fragments of uncertain date; 3. Lists and accounts; 4. Letters; 5. Fragments of documents of uncertain type; 6. Buddhist texts.

The present collection of texts is intended to record as fully as possible one of the most sensational discoveries of recent years, a series of more than 150 Bactrian documents written in cursive script on leather, cloth, or wood. In addition to the texts published in BD1 and BD2, it includes Aa (Sims-Williams--de Blois 2006, pp. 185, 187), Nn (Sims-Williams 2009), O (Sims-Williams 2007), R, S, Ss, Tt, Uu, an (Sims-Williams 2005), am1-38 (Sims-Williams 2008), bi (BD3), jj and zd (Sims-Williams forthcoming). Although it is not a document, I have also included the Tang-i Safedak inscription (TiS, Lee--Sims-Williams 2003). In the case of documents which have been published more than once (Nn, O, R, S, am1-29, zb, zd), it is of course the most recent readings and interpretations which are registered in the glossary and reverse index; the corrigenda listed in BD2 have likewise been taken into account.

Further corrections: am30+37 have now been recognized to join, with text σασκο οηρο β̣α̣[νδ]α̣γο αζγαμ̣ο; co4f read μισιδο̣ τ̣|ọ χοηο; TiS9 read ιαβργ̣ο.

The following conventions are employed in the transliteration of the text:
   Subscript points (e.g.
α̣β̣ο̣) indicate uncertain readings.
   A bullet (
) represents an illegible letter.
[ ] indicate letters to be restored where the text is broken off or completely illegible.
< > indicate words or letters added secondarily (usually above the line).
( ) indicate words or letters omitted by the scribe, e.g. by haplography. (Deliberate abbreviations are only expanded where they seem likely to cause confusion, as in the case of
μ̅ο̅λ̅ρ(αγ)ο "sealed document", R21, to be distinguished from μολρο "seal").
{ } indicate words or letters written in error (e.g. by dittography or erroneous anticipation) which should be deleted.
Punctuation marks and diacritics such as lines over the letters are reproduced in the printed text approximately as they appear in the manuscript. However, single letters used as numerals are transcribed in the usual Greek manner (e.g.
αʹ, βʹ, γʹ; but ˏα = 1000), regardless of the exact manner of writing (often in an especially elaborate shape or with diacritic points). For a full discussion of the numeral signs in the Bactrian documents and inscriptions see Sims-Williams 1999a.
A form of initial
α resembling the numeral αʹ is frequently found in αβο "to" and ασο "from" as the opening word of a letter. This is transliterated as a capital Α. The unusually elaborate form of initial α- found in A1 and ab20 is also transliterated as a capital Α, though it should be noted that it is not identical to the form of initial α used in αβο and ασο.
Regarding the symbol transliterated as
Δ see "Notes on orthography and grammar", $1.1.
The letter
ο never joins the following letter and is thus in principle distinct from α and δ, both of which normally join the following letter or at least have an off-stroke leading towards it. The unjoined form is consistently transliterated as ο, even where one might expect α, since there is clear evidence that α (= ā or ă) is sometimes reduced to ο (= ə?) or lost altogether in late Bactrian. Occasionally the letter ο (especially when it is followed by another ο) is written with an off-stroke pointing downwards to the right. It is not clear whether this manner of writing has any phonetic significance. Such cases are indicated in the text by means of the symbol οˈ as in ιαοˈο "grain" (K5, 8, 16), βοˈνο "land" (L7'), ιοˈνο "apprentice"(?) (N14'), ιοˈοηδανο "eternal" (U10), ταοˈανο (W31') or ταοˈοανο "fine" (Y24), γαοˈοανο "obligation" (Y21).
A long dash ( -- ) indicates an area, often within a word, which has been left uninscribed, e.g. because of an old imperfection in the leather or, in a note on the outside of a letter, because of the space taken up by the clay sealing.
A swung dash ( ~ ) represents a simple off-stroke or a more elaborate final flourish (sometimes looking like
-ασασ, -σανν-, -σαι etc.), which marks a word (often an abbreviation) as the last word of a text.
A back slash ( \ ) is used to indicate a line-break occurring within a word.

Some of these texts are preserved in two copies on a single sheet. In such cases, in order to facilitate comparison of the two versions, the text of the second (open) copy is printed immediately below that of the first (closed) copy [and printed in italic characters in the TITUS version]. A prime is used to distinguish the second copy (e.g. C') from the first (e.g. C). Since the two versions sometimes differ considerably, each is provided with a separate translation.
