Prapathaka: 4
Prapāṭhaka 4

[Pravargyamantrāḥ]

On the basis of the editions
P = ed. with Sāyaṇa's commentary by K.V. Abhyankarshastri and G.A. Joshishastri,
(Ānandāśramasaṃskr̥tagranthāvaliḥ, 36),
Poona 1897 / repr. 1981,

M = ed. with Bhaṭṭabhāskara Miśra's commentary by
Mahādeva Śāstri and K. Raṅgācārya,
Government Oriental Series, Bibliotheca Sanskrita Nos. 26, 27 and 29,
Mysore 1900-1902 / repr. New Delhi 1985,

and
C = ed. with Sāyaṇa's commentary by Rajendralal Mitra,
(Bibliotheca Indica),
Calcutta, 1872

edited by Jan E.M. Houben,
Leiden, 1999-2000;
TITUS version by Jost Gippert,
Frankfurt a/M, 14.2.2000 / 21.4.2012

Unusual ('southern') sandhis and spellings of edition M have been neglected (e.g. śāntiś śāntiḥ instead of śāntiḥ śāntiḥ; saṃvathsaráḥ instead of saṃvatsaráḥ).

Preverbs of unaccented finite verbs have been separated from these.

Translation (often provisory) of the mantras in this prapāṭhaka in:
J.A.B. van Buitenen,
The Pravargya,
Poona: Deccan College, 1968.

Many mantras have also been translated in
W. Caland's,
(translation of) Āpastamba śrauta sūtra,
Göttingen 1924,
book 15

and in
J.E.M. Houben,
The Pravargya Brahmana of the Taittiriya Aranyaka,
Delhi: Motilal Banarsidass, 1991.

Only possibly significant differences or possibly confusing misprints have been noted.

+ represents abbreviation sign of the editions (in abbreviated mantras, passages); well-known om-sign is rendered as OM.

Division of the texts:
   p =
prapāṭhaka
   a =
anuvāka
   d =
daśati (= decade or decade plus or minus some odd lines;
   lines =
kaṇḍikās, delimited by daṇḍas;
   to the
kaṇḍikās of a daśati letters a,b,c . . . (occasionally a,b,c . . . j,aa,bb,cc . . . ) are assigned mechanically;
   before each
kaṇḍikā the no. of anuvāka, of daśati and sequential letter appears between parentheses;
   IN ADDITION, a subdivision is given into sections which usually form a single mantra, formula or specific set of brief formulas (and hence a recognizable semantic and ritual unit) in accordance with Sāyaṇa's commentary;
   the numbers of these sections appear between parentheses (in bold, next to the
anuvāka-daśati-line indication, only at the first relevant line);
   this division follows edition C with some minor corrections; where desirable, e.g. because a
daśati border intervenes, pādas or portions between daṇḍas are further indicated with the letters a,b,c . . .;
   for concordance of this system with divisions in edition M see Houben 1991: 138ff;
   also in bold are the
pratīkas referring to verses given elsewhere (in Taittirīya-saṃhitā or Taittirīya-brāhmaṇa).

a1: Three editions differ considerably in placing of daṇḍas, hence assigning sequential letters to lines is here somewhat arbitrary
